Canals & Churches Walk

This route reveals St. Petersburg's romantic side — a city of canals, gardens, and palaces. Start at the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, whose colorful domes reflect in the waters of Griboyedov Canal. The best time for photos is early morning when there are no tourist crowds. Nearby lies Mikhailovsky Garden — one of the city's oldest gardens, laid out under Peter I. It's pleasant to rest in the shade of century-old trees and admire the northern facade of the Russian Museum. In spring, the garden is awash with flowers, and in autumn, golden foliage creates a special atmosphere. Mikhailovsky (Engineers') Castle is St. Petersburg's most mystical building. Built for Emperor Paul I, it became the site of his assassination just 40 days after he moved in. The castle is surrounded by moats and has a unique layout — each facade differs from the others. Summer Garden is St. Petersburg's oldest garden, created by order of Peter I. Marble sculptures brought from Italy, fountains, and the famous fence make it a must-visit. Here you'll also find Peter's Summer Palace — a modest building by royal standards where you can see the emperor's personal belongings. Field of Mars is a memorial park where an Eternal Flame burns in memory of revolution victims. From here, you have a panoramic view of the Neva and Peter and Paul Fortress. Crossing Trinity Bridge, you'll reach the Peter and Paul Fortress — the city's founding site. Here you'll find the burial vault of Russian emperors, the Trubetskoy Bastion prison, and the Mint. Every day at noon, a cannon shot rings out from Naryshkin Bastion — a tradition over 300 years old.

Nevsky Prospect Walk

Nevsky Prospekt is St. Petersburg's main artery, where the city's best architectural monuments, museums, and historical sites are concentrated. This route begins at the Hermitage — one of the world's largest museums with a collection of over three million exhibits. Palace Square in front of the Hermitage is a grand architectural ensemble with the Alexander Column at its center. This column, 47.5 meters tall, stands solely by its own weight — an engineering masterpiece of the 19th century. Imperial Russian parades were held here, and this is where the events of 1917 began. Walking along Nevsky, you'll pass the Admiralty with its famous ship-shaped spire — a symbol of Russia's naval glory. Next is Kazan Cathedral, built after the model of St. Peter's in Rome. Its colonnade of 96 columns impresses with its scale, and inside houses the icon of Our Lady of Kazan. Singer House is an Art Nouveau masterpiece, now the city's largest bookstore. Go up to the top floor cafe — from here you'll have the best view of Kazan Cathedral and Nevsky Prospekt. Turn toward the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood — one of Russia's most beautiful cathedrals. It was built on the site where Emperor Alexander II was mortally wounded and amazes with mosaics covering more than 7,000 square meters. The Russian Museum in the Mikhailovsky Palace holds the largest collection of Russian art. Here you can see works by Repin, Surikov, Aivazovsky, and many other masters. End your walk at Anichkov Bridge with the famous horse tamer sculptures by Klodt. This is one of St. Petersburg's most photographed bridges.

Arbat & Tverskaya Street

This route takes you through Moscow's literary and theatrical heritage, from bohemian Arbat to grand Tverskaya. Old Arbat is one of the capital's oldest streets, known since the 15th century. Today it's a pedestrian zone where street musicians and artists create a unique atmosphere. On Arbat, be sure to visit Pushkin's Memorial Apartment — this is where the great poet spent the first months after his wedding to Natalia Goncharova. The atmosphere of Pushkin's era is carefully preserved in the interiors, and guides share little-known facts about the poet's life. From Arbat, head to Patriarch's Ponds — a cult destination for Bulgakov fans. This is where the action of "The Master and Margarita" begins, where Berlioz met his fate. The atmosphere of this quiet Moscow courtyard invites leisurely walks and contemplation. Nearby is the Bulgakov Museum in the famous "bad apartment." Continue to the Bolshoi Theatre — a symbol of Russian ballet and opera. Even if you can't catch a performance, admire the magnificent facade with Apollo's chariot and visit the historic buffet. Theatre Square is especially beautiful in the evening — fountains and lighting create a magical atmosphere. You can finish the route at the Tretyakov Gallery if you have energy left. This is the largest collection of Russian art: from ancient icons to 20th-century avant-garde. Must-sees include Rublev's "Trinity," Ivanov's "The Appearance of Christ Before the People," and Vasnetsov's "Bogatyrs." The entire route is a journey through different eras of Moscow's culture. Plan at least 4-5 hours for it, or better yet, a whole day.

Red Square & Zaryadye Park

This route is a perfect introduction to Moscow's historic heart. Begin your walk at the ancient Kremlin walls, where every stone holds centuries of memory. The Kremlin towers, built by Italian masters in the 15th-16th centuries, still amaze with their grandeur and architectural perfection. Stepping onto Red Square, you'll find yourself in a place that has witnessed coronations of tsars, military parades, and public celebrations. The name "Red" comes from the old Russian word for "beautiful," and the square fully lives up to it. Here you'll find the legendary GUM — a shopping center with over a century of history, where you can taste the famous Soviet-recipe ice cream or simply admire the arcade architecture. St. Basil's Cathedral is the true gem of this route. Built by order of Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of Kazan, it consists of nine churches united by a common foundation. Each dome is unique in shape and color, while the interior amazes with ancient frescoes and iconostases. Don't miss the State Historical Museum at the square's entrance — its collection numbers millions of artifacts from the Stone Age to the present day. Even without going inside, the building itself in pseudo-Russian style deserves attention. End your walk in Zaryadye Park — a unique public space opened in 2017 on the site of the demolished Rossiya Hotel. Four natural zones of Russia are recreated here: tundra, steppe, forest, and flood meadows. The main attraction is the floating bridge, a cantilever structure extending 70 meters over the Moscow River without a single support. From here, you'll enjoy stunning views of the Kremlin, especially at sunset. The best time for this walk is early morning on a weekday when there are fewer tourists, or evening when the illumination turns on. The entire route takes 3-4 hours of leisurely walking, but you could easily spend a whole day here, visiting museums and cafes.
