Tiny! Only 0.8 km2 - smallest EU capital by area, and population only ~6000. Walk entire city in 2 hours easily. Everything is within walking distance. No transport needed within city walls.

Valletta itself is 1 day, but Malta island needs 3-5 days. Stay in Valletta as base - best location. Visit Mdina, Three Cities, Blue Grotto, Gozo island. Valletta has best restaurants and evening atmosphere.

Malta's most important church, built by Knights in 1577. Plain exterior, incredibly ornate baroque interior. Caravaggio's masterpiece 'Beheading of John the Baptist'. Entry 15 EUR. Must-visit!

Maltese and English - both official languages. Everyone speaks English fluently (British colony until 1964). Maltese is unique Semitic language with Arabic roots. Signs in both languages.

Useful tips for visiting Valletta

Watch the noon cannon firing at Upper Barrakka Gardens - daily tradition with amazing Grand Harbour views. Free to watch, great photo moment.

Visit St. John's Co-Cathedral early morning to avoid cruise ship crowds. Caravaggio painting alone is worth the €15 entry.

Take ferry from Valletta to Three Cities (Birgu, Senglea, Cospicua) - €2.80 round trip, great harbour views, less touristy medieval towns.

Try pastizzi - flaky pastry with ricotta or peas, only €0.50-1. Best at Crystal Palace in Rabat or any local bakery. Malta's most beloved snack.
