Hal Saflieni Hypogeum

The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only known prehistoric underground temple in the world. Dating back to approximately 4000 BC, this subterranean complex was carved entirely from rock and spans three levels reaching 10 meters below ground. Originally a sanctuary, it later became a necropolis holding remains of over 7,000 individuals. Only 80 visitors are permitted daily to preserve this unique site.

Best Time to Visit

Book tickets 2-3 months in advance as they sell out quickly. Last-minute tickets available at Fort St Elmo before 12PM the day before your visit. Tours are conducted every hour.

How to Get There

Located in Paola, about 400 meters from Paola church. Take bus 81, 82, 83, 84, 85 from Valletta to Paola. The Tarxien Temples are nearby and worth combining.

What to Expect

A surreal underground journey through carved rock chambers, halls, and passages. Remarkable prehistoric architecture including the Oracle Room with unique acoustic properties. To preserve this 6,000-year-old underground temple, only 80 visitors are permitted daily in groups of 10. Carbon dioxide, temperature, and humidity from visitors all affect preservation. This strict limit means tickets often sell out 2-3 months in advance.

20 last-minute tickets are released each day for the following day. They cost 50 EUR and can be purchased from Fort St Elmo or Gozo Museum of Archaeology until 12PM. After 12PM, they are available at the National Museum of Archaeology, Domvs Romana, and the Hypogeum itself. Arrive early as they sell quickly.
