A crescent-shaped bay protected from waves by a coral reef — one of Sri Lanka's best beaches for swimming. Unawatuna offers calm water, golden sand, palm trees overhead, and infrastructure: restaurants, bars, hotels within walking distance.

The Beach

A bay about 700 meters long, enclosed by headlands on both sides. The coral reef breaks waves — inside it's almost always calm. Depth increases gradually, suitable for children. Water temperature about 28C year-round.

Infrastructure

Dozens of restaurants along the beach from simple rice spots to seafood restaurants. Guesthouses, boutique hotels, villas all walking distance. Activities include snorkeling, diving, kayaking, yoga.

Surroundings

Jungle Beach — 15 minutes walk through jungle. Japanese Pagoda on hill with panoramic views. Galle Fort — 5 km, 10-15 minutes by tuk-tuk.

Practical Information

Best season November-April. From Galle — 5 km southeast, tuk-tuk 300-400 rupees. Currents are weak but watch for red flags.
