Hikkaduwa Beach & Coral Sanctuary
Beach, coral reef, and turtles right by the shore — Hikkaduwa was Sri Lanka's first beach resort and remains one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. Here fish swim a meter from shore, sea turtles come to breakfast on seaweed, and in the evening — bars, surfing, and the atmosphere of a relaxed beach town.
The Beach
Geography
Hikkaduwa is 100 km south of Colombo, on the west coast. The beach zone stretches several kilometers: from the lively center to quiet stretches to the south. Sand is golden, waves exist (surfing), but reefs create protected lagoons.
Season
West coast — November-April (dry season, calm sea). May-October — monsoon, waves, but surfers come precisely then.
Coral Sanctuary
Snorkeling
The coral reef is Hikkaduwa's main attraction. A national marine park protects the area from fishing. Corals start 50 meters from shore — you can swim there yourself. Fish — hundreds of species, from small colorful ones to large groupers.
Turtles
Sea turtles are permanent reef residents. They swim to shore to eat seaweed, not afraid of people. Best spot — near Coral Sands hotel where they're fed. Morning — better chances.
Glass-Bottom Boats
For non-swimmers — boats with transparent bottoms. They cruise over the reef, showing fish and turtles. About 500-1000 rupees per person.
Surfing
Hikkaduwa is one of Sri Lanka's main surf spots. Waves suit beginners (near beach) and experienced (further out). Surf schools, board rentals — everywhere. Season — November-April for beginners, May-October for advanced.
The Town
Atmosphere
Hikkaduwa is a resort town: hotels along the road, seafood restaurants, bars, shops. Relaxed but not deserted. Youth atmosphere, many backpackers.
Food
Seafood is the specialty: grilled fish, shrimp, lobster (expensive). Rice and curry sets — cheap and delicious. Bars — evening life.
Practical Information
Getting There
Train from Colombo — 2-2.5 hours, scenic coastal route. Bus — faster but less comfortable. From Galle — 20 km north.
Accommodation
From budget guesthouses to decent hotels. Book ahead in season. Best spots — with reef access.
Safety
Currents exist — watch beach flags. Corals are sharp — coral shoes useful. Sun is harsh — sunscreen mandatory.
Nearby
Galle Fort — 20 km south. Unawatuna — 30 km, another beach. Turtle hatcheries — several along coast.
Atmosphere
Hikkaduwa is Sri Lanka for beach vacation without pretension: not Maldives boutique hotels, but an honest resort with reef, turtles, and sunsets. Here you can spend the day in water, evening in a bar, and morning — back to the turtles. Perfect stop between Cultural Triangle and southern beaches.
