Mirissa Beach & Whale Watching
A beach with a coconut palm on a rock, whales in the ocean, and an atmosphere people describe as "like Thailand 20 years ago." Mirissa is Sri Lanka's premier whale-watching destination and a beach that has maintained a balance between infrastructure and relaxation. Here you can spot a blue whale in the morning and watch the sunset with a cocktail in the evening.
Whales
Season
November through April—blue whales and sperm whales pass along the southern coast. Peak season is January-March. Mirissa is the main departure point for whale watching tours.
Tours
Boats depart early morning (6:00-6:30 AM), returning by noon. Price—5,000-8,000 rupees per person, including breakfast. Chances of seeing whales are high (80%+ in season), but not guaranteed. Blue whales—the largest animals on the planet—measure 25-30 meters.
What to Expect
2-3 hours on the ocean, swells (motion sickness tablets recommended), waiting, then—a spout on the horizon, a back, a tail. Dolphins—almost certain. Seasickness—likely if you're prone to it.
The Beach
Characteristics
A bay between two headlands with moderate waves. The main beach stretches about a kilometer—plenty of room. Golden sand, warm water.
Parrot Rock
A rock with a palm tree—Mirissa's symbol and most photographed spot. You can climb it, but carefully—the rocks are slippery.
Coconut Tree Hill
A hill with coconut palms—an Instagram hotspot. 10 minutes from the beach, nominal entrance fee. Beautiful at sunset.
Infrastructure
Accommodation
Guesthouses, boutique hotels, villas—good selection. Prices have risen in recent years but remain cheaper than Unawatuna.
Food
Restaurants on the beach and in the village. Seafood is the specialty. The night fish market—fresher than fresh.
Nightlife
Beach bars, occasional parties. Not Ibiza, but livelier than Unawatuna.
Practical Information
Getting There
35 km east of Galle. Tuk-tuk—1,500-2,000 rupees. Bus—cheap but slow. Train to Weligama plus tuk-tuk.
How Long to Stay
Minimum 2-3 days: one day for whales (with early departure), one day on the beach, one day for surroundings.
What's Nearby
Weligama—5 km, surfing. Galle—35 km, history. Koggala—along the way, stilt fishermen.
Atmosphere
Mirissa is balance. Developed enough to be comfortable, but not turned into a resort factory. Whales are a unique experience, the beach is relaxation, evenings have character. Many who come for two days stay a week.
