Unawatuna Beach
A crescent-shaped bay protected from waves by a coral reef — one of Sri Lanka's best beaches for swimming. Unawatuna offers calm water, golden sand, palm trees overhead, and infrastructure: restaurants, bars, hotels within walking distance. A beach for those who want to swim, not fight waves.
The Beach
Geography
A bay about 700 meters long, enclosed by headlands on both sides. The coral reef at the bay's entrance breaks waves — inside it's almost always calm. Depth increases gradually, suitable for children.
Water
Temperature — about 28C year-round. Visibility is good, especially in the morning. Snorkeling possible (fish are there), but Hikkaduwa's reef is richer.
Sand
Golden, fine, clean. Beach is maintained (hotels are invested). Loungers and umbrellas — from restaurants, usually free with an order.
Infrastructure
Restaurants
Dozens of establishments along the beach: from simple rice spots to seafood restaurants. Tables on the sand, feet in water — common. Prices — tourist level but not outrageous.
Accommodation
Guesthouses, boutique hotels, villas — all walking distance from the beach. Book ahead in season (November-April).
Activities
Snorkeling, diving (schools available), kayaking. Yoga classes — popular. Beach massage — offered everywhere.
Surroundings
Jungle Beach
Small beach 15 minutes walk through jungle — less crowded, more atmospheric. Path from Unawatuna's eastern edge.
Japanese Pagoda
White stupa on a hill above the bay — panoramic views of beach and ocean. 10-minute climb, free.
Galle
Galle Fort — 5 km, 10-15 minutes by tuk-tuk. Makes sense to combine: morning at fort, afternoon at beach.
Practical Information
Season
November-April — dry season, calm sea. May-October — monsoon, waves, rain (but fine between rains).
Getting There
From Galle — 5 km southeast. Tuk-tuk — 300-400 rupees. From Colombo — train to Galle + tuk-tuk, or direct bus.
Safety
Currents are weak (bay), but possible in evening after rains. Watch for red flags. Theft rare, but don't leave valuables.
Unawatuna vs Others
Unawatuna — for swimming and comfort. Hikkaduwa — for snorkeling and surfing. Mirissa — for whales and atmosphere. Weligama — for learning to surf.
Atmosphere
Unawatuna is a beach without surprises: you know what you'll get, and you get exactly that. Warm water, palm trees, fish for dinner, sunset with a cocktail. Not wild, not deserted — resort-style in a good way. Perfect place to land after the Cultural Triangle and mountains.
