Ihlara Valley
Ihlara Valley is a 14-kilometer deep river canyon cutting through the Cappadocian plains, carved by the Melendiz River over millions of years. The canyon walls reaching 100 meters high contain over 100 rock-cut Byzantine churches dating from the 4th to 13th centuries. The hiking trail along the river is one of Turkey's most beautiful, passing under shady trees and through hidden ancient churches. The valley served as a refuge for early Christians.
