Doha — A City That Surprises
Doha is a capital that defies stereotypes. Just half a century ago, this was a modest fishing village. Today, it's one of the world's most modern and ambitious cities. Futuristic skyscrapers reflect in the Persian Gulf waters, while just minutes away, a traditional Arab market seems frozen in time.
If Dubai is flashy luxury and tourist chaos, Doha is its more refined, calmer sister. Less pomp, more authentic culture. Quieter, cleaner, and somehow... cozier. World-class museums with free admission, perfect infrastructure built for the 2022 World Cup, and that genuine Arabian hospitality where every taxi driver is proud to tell you about their country.
Doha is the perfect city for your first encounter with the Persian Gulf. It's so safe you can walk at night in any neighborhood. It's clean literally everywhere — from streets to public restrooms. And it's surprisingly accessible: the Qatar Airways Stopover program lets you stay at a 5-star hotel from just $14 per night.
Doha Districts: Where to Stay and What to See
Souq Waqif — The Heart of Old Doha
If Doha has a soul, it lives here. Souq Waqif is a restored traditional market with maze-like narrow streets, aromas of spices and cardamom coffee, merchant calls, and... falcons. Yes, real falcons — falconry is a national sport here, and Souq Waqif has an entire falcon hospital.
Come in the evening when the heat subsides and the city comes alive. Dozens of restaurants offer everything from traditional Qatari cuisine to Lebanese mezze and Iranian kebabs. Sit on cushions in a traditional cafe, smoking shisha and watching locals pass by in pristine white dishdashas.
Who it's for: Anyone wanting to feel authentic Arab atmosphere. Hotels here are atmospheric (Souq Waqif Boutique Hotels), and the airport is just 10-12 minutes away.
West Bay — Qatar's Manhattan
The skyscraper district on the bay is the face of modern Qatar. Here you'll find offices of global corporations, major 5-star hotels (W Doha, Four Seasons, Sheraton Grand), and the famous Corniche — a 7km waterfront promenade with views of the entire city skyline.
Who it's for: Business travelers, architecture lovers, those who want to be in the center of action.
The Pearl-Qatar — Qatar's Venice
An artificial island built in the shape of a pearl. Yachts, boutiques, restaurants overlooking the marina — Qatar's answer to Dubai. But quieter and more intimate. Porto Arabia is especially beautiful in the evening when lights turn on and white yachts reflect in the water.
You can simply walk for hours here — free. Or stop at one of the beach clubs or restaurants.
Who it's for: Romantics, luxury lovers, Instagram bloggers.
Msheireb — The Smart City
The world's first 'sustainable downtown' — a district built from scratch on eco-friendly principles. Modern interpretation of traditional Qatari architecture, pedestrian zones, Msheireb Museums (free!). Main transport hub — easy metro access to anywhere.
Who it's for: Architecture enthusiasts, those who value walkability and modern design.
Katara — Cultural Village
An entire district dedicated to art and culture. Open-air amphitheater, galleries, beautiful mosques, restaurants. Also home to Katara Beach — but with very strict dress code (no bikinis!).
Who it's for: Art lovers, families with children, those wanting to see Qatar's cultural side.
Lusail — City of the Future
A completely new city built for the 2022 World Cup. Home to Lusail Stadium where the final was held, and the luxury Place Vendome mall. Futuristic architecture, wide boulevards, a feeling of being in the future.
Who it's for: Football fans, shopping lovers, architecture enthusiasts.
Must-See Attractions
Museum of Islamic Art (MIA)
Doha's main attraction and possibly the entire Persian Gulf's crown jewel. An architectural masterpiece by I.M. Pei (designer of the Louvre pyramid) stands on its own island, connected to shore by a bridge. Inside — the world's finest collection of Islamic art: manuscripts, ceramics, jewelry, textiles from across the Muslim world.
Entry is free! This isn't a typo. One of the world's best museums — free.
Be sure to walk through MIA Park at sunset — the views of West Bay skyscrapers are unforgettable.
National Museum of Qatar
A building shaped like a 'desert rose' — an architectural phenomenon by Jean Nouvel. Qatar's history from ancient times to today told through stunning interactive exhibits, video installations, and artifacts. Tickets ~50 QAR, but worth it.
Souq Waqif
A restored traditional market — not a museum, but a living place. Spices, perfumes, fabrics, souvenirs, falcons, camels, restaurants, cafes. Come in the evening when everything comes alive. Bargain — it's part of the culture.
The Corniche
A 7km waterfront promenade along the bay. Perfect for morning jogs or evening walks. Skyscraper views on one side, the bay on the other. On weekends, all of Doha strolls here.
The Pearl-Qatar
Walking around marinas with yachts — free and beautiful. Porto Arabia and Medina Centrale are the main walking areas. Many restaurants, but you can just walk and admire.
Msheireb Museums
Four historic houses telling Qatar's story: oil, slavery, traditional life. Free entry, interesting exhibitions.
Katara Cultural Village
Amphitheater, galleries, mosques, restaurants. Festivals and concerts often held here. Beautiful place for evening walks.
Getting Around the City
Metro — Doha's Pride
Built for the 2022 World Cup, Doha Metro is a work of art. Clean air-conditioned stations, silent trains, clear navigation. Three lines (Red, Green, Gold) connect the airport, center, Souq Waqif, West Bay, The Pearl.
Prices: Single ride just 2 QAR! Unlimited day pass — 6 QAR. Card costs 20 QAR (10 deposit + 10 credit).
Hours: Sat-Thu 5:00-1:00, Fri 9:00-1:00.
Tip: There are Gold Class carriages and separate carriages for women with children.
Taxis and Uber
Uber works excellently — the main way to get a taxi. Prices are reasonable: minimum 8 QAR, around city 15-30 QAR, airport to center 40-60 QAR.
Official Karwa taxis (turquoise cars) are slightly pricier but reliable.
Important: Careem NO longer operates in Qatar! Don't waste time installing it.
Code RAIL in Uber gives 20% off rides to/from metro stations.
Buses
Metrolink — free shuttle buses to metro stations. Regular buses cost 3-5 QAR, air-conditioned, but tourists rarely use them.
Car Rental
Roads are perfect, fuel is cheap, international license is sufficient. But parking downtown can be problematic, and for the desert you need 4x4.

This is a safe, clean, modern city with rich culture and an amazing contrast between skyscrapers and desert. If you're flying through Doha with a layover — definitely use the Stopover program, it's one of the best travel hacks in the world. And if you're looking for a Dubai alternative — you've found it.
