The Pearl-Qatar is an artificial island shaped like a pearl, a symbol of luxury living in Doha. Built on the site of former pearl diving grounds, the 4 square kilometer island houses residential complexes, boutiques, restaurants, and yacht marinas.
History and Concept
Construction began in 2004 in the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf. The name references Qatar's history as a pearl diving center. This is the first project in the country where foreigners can own property. Construction costs exceeded 15 billion dollars.
Architecture
The island consists of several districts with different architectural styles. Porto Arabia resembles Saint-Tropez, Medina Centrale is an Arab town, Viva Bahriya resembles Venice with canals.
Island Districts
Porto Arabia is the main marina with restaurants and boutiques. Medina Centrale is a pedestrian zone with squares and fountains, the nightlife center. Viva Bahriya offers waterfront apartments.
Practical Information
The island is located 20 minutes drive from downtown Doha. Entry is free for everyone. The best time for a stroll is evening when the heat subsides. Combine your visit with dinner on the waterfront for magnificent yacht and sunset views.
