ヒッカドゥワビーチ
Beach, coral reef, and turtles right by the shore — Hikkaduwa was Sri Lanka's first beach resort and remains one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. Here fish swim a meter from shore, sea turtles come to breakfast on seaweed, and in the evening — bars, surfing, and the atmosphere of a relaxed beach town.
The Beach
Hikkaduwa is 100 km south of Colombo on the west coast. The beach zone stretches several kilometers. Golden sand, waves exist (surfing), but reefs create protected lagoons. Best season November-April.
Coral Sanctuary
The coral reef is the main attraction. National marine park protects the area. Corals start 50 meters from shore. Hundreds of fish species. Sea turtles come to shore to eat seaweed. Glass-bottom boats available for non-swimmers.
Surfing
One of Sri Lanka's main surf spots. Waves suit beginners (near beach) and experienced (further out). Surf schools and board rentals everywhere.
Practical Information
Train from Colombo 2-2.5 hours. From Galle 20 km north. Budget guesthouses to decent hotels available. Watch for currents and use coral shoes.
