Sri Lanka's largest national park and home to the world's highest density of leopards. Yala combines savanna, jungle, lakes, and ocean in one space where you can see elephants, crocodiles, peacocks, and — if lucky — the elusive leopard.

The Park

Yala is located in the island's southeast, bordering the ocean. 979 sq km is the tourist-accessible portion (Block 1). The landscape includes dry savanna, monsoon forests, mangrove swamps, and lagoons. The star attraction is the leopard (about 70 in Block 1). Elephants are almost guaranteed, with herds up to 50.

Safari

Only organized jeep safaris allowed. Jeep + driver + guide is mandatory. Morning safari: 5:30-6:00 start, return by 11:00. Evening: 14:00-15:00 until sunset. Duration: 4-5 hours. Entry $30-40, jeep $50-80 per half-day. Total $60-100 per person in groups of 4-6.

Practical Tips

Best time: February-July (dry season). Park closes September-October for monsoons. Bring binoculars, camera with zoom, sunscreen, neutral-colored clothing. Stay in Tissamaharama (30 minutes from entrance).
