Kazán

Kazan is a city where East meets West, and this route shows this fusion of cultures. Kazan Kremlin is a UNESCO site where Orthodox churches neighbor mosques, and ancient walls remember both Ivan the Terrible and Kazan khans. Kul Sharif Mosque is Tatarstan's main mosque and one of the largest in Europe. It's named after the imam who died defending Kazan in 1552. The modern building (2005) recreates a mosque destroyed during the khanate era. Everyone can enter — it's an Islamic museum with stunning interiors. Nearby is the 16th-century Annunciation Cathedral, Kazan's oldest surviving building. The contrast between the mosque and cathedral symbolizes the peaceful coexistence of religions in Tatarstan. Söyembikä Tower is Kazan's "leaning" tower with an inclination of almost 2 meters. Legend says Queen Söyembikä threw herself from it, refusing to marry Ivan the Terrible. Historians debate the construction date, but the tower remains a city symbol. Bauman Street is the local Arbat, a pedestrian zone with cafes, shops, and street musicians. Here you'll find a replica of Catherine II's carriage, the Kazan Cat monument, and many Tatar cuisine restaurants. Be sure to try echpochmak (triangular meat pie) and chak-chak (honey-drenched pastry). End the route at the "Kazan" Family Center — a futuristic building shaped like a cauldron (kazan). The observation deck offers a panorama of the city and the Kazanka River.
