Rawai Seafood Market
Rawai Seafood Market is where you can buy the freshest catches directly from fishing boats and have them prepared immediately at one of the waterfront restaurants. This is an authentic experience, far from the tourist restaurants of Patong, where locals come to buy fish for their own tables.
How It Works
Fishing boats return with their catch early in the morning. On the stalls—shrimp, crabs, lobsters, squid, fish of all kinds. You choose your seafood, bargain, then carry it to one of the restaurants across the road. There, for a small fee, they'll cook it to your taste.
What to Buy
Tiger prawns the size of your palm are the signature product. Mud crabs with succulent meat. Lobsters significantly cheaper than restaurant prices. Oysters, scallops, parrotfish—all live and fresh.
Restaurants
A row of restaurants opposite the market prepares your purchased seafood. Popular methods: grilled, fried with garlic, Thai curry, steamed with lime. Cooking fee—from 100 baht per dish. Side dishes, drinks, and sauces are ordered separately.
Best Time
Early morning (6:00-9:00 AM)—maximum selection and freshness. By lunch, the assortment diminishes. Evening—atmospheric time for dinner with sunset views over the sea. Weekends are more crowded.
Rawai Beach
The beach itself isn't suitable for swimming—boats moor here. But it's the departure point for islands: Coral, Racha, Bon. The promenade with sea gypsies and island views creates a colorful backdrop for your meal.
Getting There
Rawai is at Phuket's southern tip, 40 minutes from Patong. Easy to combine with visiting Promthep Cape at sunset or Big Buddha.
Atmosphere and Character
Rawai is an anti-tourist experience: no menus, no fixed prices, but seafood that was in the ocean an hour ago. Bargain, chat with vendors, choose for yourself—that's part of the pleasure.
