Mount Vesuvius is one of the world's most famous and dangerous volcanoes, responsible for destroying Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD. Rising 1,281 meters above the Bay of Naples, visitors can hike to the crater rim and look inside. The volcano is still active and constantly monitored. Views from the summit include the entire bay and the buried cities.
