Koggala Beach
A long, empty beach with stilt fishermen — the postcard image of Sri Lanka. Koggala is 5 kilometers of sand where tourists are fewer than Unawatuna, waves are stronger, and at sunset — silhouettes of fishermen balancing above water on wooden poles. A beach for those seeking space and authenticity.
The Beach
Character
Open ocean — waves almost always present. Swimming possible but watch currents. Sand — golden, wide. Beach stretches for kilometers — you can walk for hours without encountering crowds.
Stilt Fishermen
Stilt fishermen — the famous image: fishermen sitting on wooden poles in the water catching fish. The tradition is fading but preserved for tourists. Early morning and sunset — best time for photos. They ask 500-1000 rupees for photos — that's normal, don't bargain too hard.
Nearby
Koggala Lake
The largest lake on the south coast — boat trips, birds, mangrove islets. You can see monitor lizards, monkeys, herons. Boat tour — about 2000-3000 rupees.
Martin Wickramasinghe House Museum
Home of the famous Sri Lankan writer — museum with collection of folklore, traditional masks, crafts. Interesting for understanding the culture.
Turtle Hatchery
Several farms for rescuing and breeding sea turtles. You can see baby turtles and adults. Quality varies — read reviews.
Infrastructure
Accommodation
Less choice than Unawatuna, but exists: from guesthouses to luxury hotels (The Fortress, Jetwing Lighthouse). Quieter, calmer, more spacious.
Food
Hotel restaurants, some independent places. Not as many as on tourist beaches — plus or minus depending on preferences.
Practical Information
Getting There
Between Galle (10 km) and Weligama (10 km). Tuk-tuk from Galle — 600-800 rupees. Buses along the coast — cheap but slow.
Season
November-April — best time. Monsoon (May-October) — higher waves, fewer fishermen.
Who It's For
Koggala is for those tired of tourist beaches. No bars on the sand, no crowds with selfie sticks. There's space, waves, fishermen, and the feeling of real Sri Lanka. Suitable for peaceful relaxation, long walks, photography.
Atmosphere
Koggala is the beach you imagine when thinking of a tropical island: endless, empty, with palm trees and fishermen. Reality is close to the picture — especially at dawn when it's just you and the fishermen. Less convenient than Unawatuna, less party than Hikkaduwa — but that's exactly why it's valuable.
