Originally built in the 11th century and reconstructed in the 12th century after an earthquake, the castle has served various purposes throughout history including as a military fortress, provincial prison, and now a major tourist attraction. The castle complex includes the Viewing Tower offering panoramic views of Ljubljana and the Alps, the Museum of Slovenian History, the Museum of Puppetry, a chapel, and several restaurants.
