The Pearl-Qatar
The Pearl-Qatar is an artificial island shaped like a pearl, a symbol of luxury living in Doha. Built on the site of former pearl diving grounds, the 4 square kilometer island houses residential complexes, boutiques, restaurants, and yacht marinas.
History and Concept
Construction began in 2004 in the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf. The name references Qatar's history as a pearl diving center. This is the first project in the country where foreigners can own property. Construction costs exceeded 15 billion dollars.
Architecture
The island consists of several districts with different architectural styles. Porto Arabia resembles Saint-Tropez, Medina Centrale is an Arab town, Viva Bahriya resembles Venice with canals. Towers, villas, and townhouses are designed in Mediterranean style.
Island Districts
Porto Arabia is the main marina with restaurants and boutiques along the waterfront. Medina Centrale is a pedestrian zone with squares and fountains, the nightlife center. Viva Bahriya offers waterfront apartments. Qanat Quartier is the hotel sector with beach clubs.
Shopping and Restaurants
The island has over 200 shops: from mass market to luxury brands. Restaurants represent world cuisines: Italian, Japanese, Lebanese, Indian. In the evening, the waterfronts come alive with cafes and lounges opening.
Practical Information
The island is located 20 minutes drive from downtown Doha. Entry is free for everyone. Parking is paid, but you can arrive by taxi. The best time for a stroll is evening when the heat subsides and lighting turns on.
Tips
Combine your visit with dinner on the waterfront, the views of yachts and sunset are magnificent. Beach access requires going through hotels or beach clubs. After your walk, visit the nearby Katara Cultural Village.
