St. Mary's Basilica
St. Mary's Basilica is a majestic Gothic church overlooking the Main Market Square with its famous asymmetrical twin towers. The church's greatest treasure is the wooden altarpiece carved by Veit Stoss in 1489, the largest Gothic altar in the world at 13 meters high and 11 meters wide when open. Every hour a trumpeter plays the hejnal melody from the taller tower in all four cardinal directions, stopping abruptly mid-note to commemorate a 13th-century watchman struck by a Tatar arrow. The interior is fully decorated with golden stars on a blue ceiling, colorful frescoes, and magnificent stained glass windows. The tower can be climbed in summer for a unique view of the square
