Sé Nova (New Cathedral)
The Sé Nova is a former 17th-century Jesuit church that became the seat of Coimbra's bishopric in 1772. Its imposing white Mannerist facade inspired Portuguese colonial church architecture from Brazil to India. The interior is rich with Baroque gilded woodwork and fourteen side altarpieces. Located right next to the University of Coimbra, it makes a convenient stop during a campus tour. Entry is free with a suggested donation of 1 euro. The church contains notable religious art including paintings and sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries.
