Schneeballen Rothenburg
Schneeballen (snowballs) are a traditional Franconian pastry made for over 400 years that has become Rothenburg's signature treat. Made from shortcrust pastry, cut into strips, shaped into a ball using a special mold called Schneeballeneisen, and deep-fried until golden brown. The classic recipe is dusted with powdered sugar, but today many flavours are available from chocolate and marzipan to cinnamon and vanilla. About 8-10 cm in diameter with a crispy, cookie-like texture. Available at bakeries and cafes throughout the Old Town, they stay fresh for up to 8 weeks without refrigeration, making them a perfect souvenir.
