Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova
The Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova was built in the 17th century on a higher hill to replace the flooded old monastery. The church houses the incorrupt body of Saint Queen Isabel, patron of Coimbra, in a stunning silver Baroque shrine. The monastery's Mannerist design was created by Father João Turriano and features Portugal's largest cloister. The main altarpiece is a magnificent example of gilded woodwork in the Portuguese National style. The Miracle of the Roses story associated with Saint Isabel is told throughout the monastery. The feast day of Saint Isabel on July 4th is celebrated as Coimbra's City Day.
