Quinta das Lágrimas
Quinta das Lágrimas, meaning 'Estate of Tears', is a historic garden estate wrapped in the tragic love story of Inês de Castro and Prince Pedro. According to legend, Inês was murdered here in 1355 by order of the king. The 12-hectare gardens contain the Fountain of Tears, where red algae grows said to be from Inês's blood, and the Canal of Love through which the lovers exchanged messages. Portugal's first medieval garden features 50 species of historic plants. The palace is now a luxury hotel but the gardens are open to visitors. The romantic atmosphere makes it popular for weddings.
