Penedo da Saudade
Penedo da Saudade, meaning 'Stone of Longing', is a romantic garden established in 1849 overlooking the Mondego River and city. Legend says Prince Pedro would come here to mourn his beloved Inês de Castro, who was executed by order of his father. The park is adorned with stone plaques inscribed with poems and messages from past University of Coimbra students, adding unique emotional depth. Featuring busts of Portuguese writers, shaded pavilions, and stunning views, it is the perfect spot for watching sunset. The park includes the Poets' Retreat and tributes to writers Eça de Queirós and António Nobre.
