Neve Tzedek
Neve Tzedek, meaning 'Oasis of Justice', is Tel Aviv's oldest neighborhood, established in 1887, 20 years before the city itself. Built by Jewish families seeking escape from overcrowded Jaffa, the neighborhood features low-slung colorful buildings with expansive gardens and winding alleyways. In the early 1900s it became a haven for bohemian writers and artists, including Nobel laureate Shmuel Yosef Agnon. After a period of decline, the neighborhood was restored in the 1980s and is now a trendy area with boutique shops, art galleries, upscale restaurants, and stylish cafés. The main Shabazi Street runs through the center with the Suzanne Dallal Center for Dance and Theatre. The unique Oriental architectural style and European village atmosphere make it one of Tel Aviv's most charming neighborhoods.
