Monastery of Santa Cruz
The Monastery of Santa Cruz is a National Monument housing the tombs of Portugal's first two kings: Afonso Henriques and Sancho I. Founded in the 12th century by Augustinian friars, it was a major cultural center that led to the establishment of the University of Coimbra. The church features a magnificent Manueline facade, while the cloister displays exquisite Azulejo tiles depicting the life of Saint Augustine. The Gothic royal tombs are adorned with intricate carvings representing the pinnacle of Portuguese art. The adjacent historic Café Santa Cruz occupies a former chapel with stunning Gothic arches.
