Kotoku-in (Great Buddha)
The Great Buddha of Kamakura, known as Daibutsu, is one of Japan's most famous landmarks. This monumental bronze statue stands 13.35 meters tall and weighs approximately 121 tons. Cast in 1252, the statue was originally housed inside a large wooden hall that was destroyed by a tsunami in 1498. Since then, the Buddha has stood in the open air, adding to its dramatic appearance. Visitors can enter the interior of the statue for a small additional fee to appreciate its hollow bronze construction.
