Hiroshima Castle
Hiroshima Castle, also known as the 'Carp Castle' (Ri-jo), was originally built in the 1590s by feudal lord Mori Terumoto. Completely destroyed by the atomic bomb, it was reconstructed in 1958 using reinforced concrete. IMPORTANT: The main tower (Tenshukaku) will close on March 22, 2026 due to earthquake safety concerns. The castle grounds and Ninomaru area remain free to enter. A new history museum is planned to open in Spring 2027. Visit before March 2026 to see the interior exhibits including samurai armor and swords.
