Grote Markt
Grote Markt is Antwerp's main square, surrounded by ornate Renaissance guild houses and the majestic City Hall. At its center stands the famous Brabo Fountain depicting the legendary Roman soldier throwing the giant's severed hand. This mythical story explains the city's name 'Hand werpen' (hand throwing). The guild houses with their gilded and colorful facades represent the city's 16th-century trading wealth. Cafes and restaurants under the arcades make it a perfect spot for people-watching. In winter, the Christmas market adds special magic. The Stadhuis (City Hall) is a masterpiece of Flemish Renaissance architecture.
