The Baptistery of Saint John is one of Florence's oldest buildings, dating to the 11th century. It is famous for its three bronze doors, especially Ghiberti's 'Gates of Paradise' which Michelangelo praised. The interior ceiling is covered with stunning Byzantine mosaics depicting the Last Judgment. This octagonal building is where Dante and generations of Florentines were baptized.
