Casa de Montejo is the only surviving civil Renaissance building in Mexico, built between 1542 and 1549 as the residence of Francisco de Montejo, founder of Mérida and conqueror of Yucatán. Its stunning carved facade depicts Spanish soldiers standing on defeated heads, symbolizing the conquest.
