Bulgakov Museum (The Bad Apartment)
The Mikhail Bulgakov Museum is located in the famous "bad apartment" No. 50 at 10 Bolshaya Sadovaya Street, where the writer lived from 1921 to 1924. This is where the action of "The Master and Margarita" takes place, and where Woland arrives with his retinue.
History of the Building
The apartment building was constructed in 1903 by tobacco manufacturer Pigit. Bulgakov settled here in a communal flat, occupying one room with his wife. The harsh realities of communal living and colorful neighbors found their way into the writer's works, especially "The Master and Margarita."
The "Bad Apartment"
In the novel, this address is home to MASSOLIT chairman Berlioz, and later becomes Woland's headquarters with his retinue. Satan's Ball, Margarita's flight, the antics of Koroviev and Behemoth—everything is connected to this place. The apartment has become a cult destination for the writer's fans.
Museum Exhibition
The museum recreates the atmosphere of the 1920s. Bulgakov's room contains authentic furniture and period items. The communal corridor immerses you in the daily life of that era. A separate hall is dedicated to "The Master and Margarita" with illustrations, manuscripts, and installations.
The Blue Study
A reconstruction of the writer's study in the apartment on Bolshaya Pirogovskaya, where the novel was created. Blue walls—Bulgakov's favorite color—a writing desk, and books create a sense of the author's presence.
Surroundings
Nearby are Patriarch's Ponds, where the novel begins and Berlioz and Homeless meet Woland. The walk from the museum to the ponds is an essential pilgrimage for Bulgakov devotees.
Tours
The museum offers themed tours: "Bulgakov and Moscow," nighttime walks through Bulgakov-related sites, and theatrical performances. Programs during the full moon are especially popular, recalling scenes from the novel.
Practical Information
The museum is open daily except Monday. The nearest metro is Mayakovskaya. Entry to the stairwell is free, where fans' graffiti and inscriptions are preserved.
