Arco de Almedina
The Arco de Almedina is the surviving gateway of the 12th-century Moorish city walls. It marked the entrance to the Arab medina before Christians recaptured the city in 1064. The Gothic arch and massive tower lead to the famous Rua Quebra-Costas, meaning 'back-breaker' due to its steep steps. The tower now houses the Municipal Historical Archives. This is the perfect starting point for exploring the historic upper town and the path to the university. The narrow streets beyond the arch are filled with traditional shops and student bars.
