Ao Nang Beach
Ao Nang is the main resort of Krabi Province, the jumping-off point for excursions to the Phi Phi Islands, Railay, and national parks. It's a compromise between tourist infrastructure and access to the natural beauty of the Andaman Sea.
Ao Nang Beach
The main beach is a long strip of sand along a promenade lined with restaurants, bars, and shops. Not the best for swimming (murky water, longtails), but convenient as a base. Nopparat Thara Beach, 10 minutes away, is cleaner and calmer.
Infrastructure
The main street along the beach concentrates hotels, from hostels to resorts. Restaurants, massage parlors, travel agencies, and dive centers on every corner. A night market operates daily. ATMs and exchange offices are readily available.
Excursions
Longtails and speedboats depart for Railay every 15 minutes. Day tours run to Phi Phi, Hong Islands, and the Four Islands. Kayaking through mangrove forests, snorkeling, and diving are organized everywhere.
Four Islands
The popular day tour includes Chicken Island (rock shaped like a chicken), Tup Island, Poda Island, and Phra Nang Cave. Snorkeling, beach relaxation, lunch—the standard program. You can hire a private longtail for flexibility.
Surroundings
Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua)—1,260 steps to a golden statue atop a cliff with panoramic views. Hot springs in the jungle. The Emerald Pool—a natural pond with turquoise water in the national park.
Getting There
Krabi Airport is 40 minutes away. Buses from Bangkok (12 hours), Phuket (3 hours), Koh Lanta (2 hours). Shuttles connect to major destinations.
Atmosphere and Tips
Ao Nang isn't a destination—it's a convenient base. The resort itself is touristy and commercial, but access to Krabi's beauty is the main advantage. For beach relaxation, Railay or Lanta are better choices.
