Walled medieval city on Greek side. Laiki Geitonia neighborhood with narrow streets, cafes, craft shops. Venetian walls, Famagusta Gate. Gentrified but charming.
Cross Green Line to Turkish North Cyprus. Selimiye Mosque (former cathedral), Büyük Han caravanserai, authentic markets. Less touristy, more raw. Different currency (TRY).
Main pedestrian shopping street leading to checkpoint crossing. Border crossing point to North. Cafes, shops, the 'Berlin Wall' of Cyprus. Most symbolic spot in divided city.

Yes! Just walk across at Ledra Street checkpoint. Show passport, get stamp on paper (not passport). Cross freely unlimited times. Different world - Turkish language, mosques, Lira currency. Very safe.
1974 Turkish invasion after Greek coup split Cyprus. UN Green Line divides city since then. North = Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (only Turkey recognizes). South = Republic of Cyprus (EU member). Negotiations ongoing.
Nicosia is inland - no beach! Nearest beaches: Larnaca (45 min), Ayia Napa (1.5 hours), Limassol (1 hour). Most tourists stay on coast and skip Nicosia. But the capital is worth 1-2 days for its unique character.
South (Republic of Cyprus) is EU member since 2004 - uses Euro. North (Turkish side) is NOT EU - uses Turkish Lira. EU law technically applies to whole island but suspended in North. Unusual political situation.
Useful tips for visiting Nicosia

Visit Büyük Han on North side - beautiful restored Ottoman caravanserai with cafes and craft shops. One of best preserved in Eastern Mediterranean. Great coffee stop.
Climb Shacolas Tower for panoramic view of divided city - see both sides from above. Small fee, air-conditioned, nice escape from heat.
Summer is extremely hot (40°C+). Visit in spring/autumn. Carry water, seek shade during midday. Many places close for siesta 13:00-16:00.
