Ella
Ella — Gem of Sri Lanka's Hill Country
Ella is a small town that has become a must-stop for every Sri Lanka traveler. At 1,040m elevation, surrounded by tea plantations and misty mountains, it has a special atmosphere — a mix of hiking spirit and relaxation.
Why Visit Ella
Ella is the base for exploring hill country Sri Lanka. From here it's easy to reach main attractions: Nine Arch Bridge (most Instagrammed spot on the island), Little Adam's Peak (easy hike with panoramic views), and Ravana Falls. The Kandy-Ella train is considered one of the most scenic rides in the world.
How to Get There
- Train from Kandy: 5-6 hours, most popular way. Book tickets at least 3 days ahead on seat61.com or through hotel. 2nd class is optimal — windows open!
- From Colombo: night train or 6-7 hours day train via Kandy
- By bus: cheaper but longer and less comfortable
- Taxi from Nuwara Eliya: 1.5 hours, ~$25-30
What to See
Nine Arch Bridge
Colonial viaduct from 1921, built without steel. Come at sunrise (5:30-6:00 AM) — empty and best light. Train times change — ask your hotel. DO NOT fly drones — bees attack!
Little Adam's Peak
Easy 30-minute hike with stunning 360° views. Free. Best at sunrise. Can combine with Nine Arch Bridge in morning.
Ella Rock
More serious 3-4 hour hike. Start early morning — hot during day. Take guide or GPS — trail is confusing.
Ravana Falls
25m waterfall 6km from town. Can swim, but careful — rocks are slippery. Best after monsoon (December-April).
