Ravana Falls
A 25-meter waterfall by the road between Ella and the coast — one of the island's most accessible and photogenic waterfalls. Ravana Falls is named after the demon-king from the Ramayana epic, who, according to legend, hid the kidnapped Princess Sita here. Beautiful story, beautiful waterfall.
Legend
Ramayana
According to Sri Lankans, King Ravana wasn't a villain but a powerful ruler of ancient Sri Lanka. He kidnapped Sita, wife of Prince Rama, and hid her in caves near this waterfall. Rama came with his monkey army for his wife — you know the rest.
Cave
Near the waterfall is Ravana Ella Cave (a separate attraction), where Sita was allegedly kept. Historical accuracy is doubtful, but the atmosphere fits.
The Waterfall
Characteristics
Height — about 25 meters, width — up to 10 meters during rainy season. Water cascades over a rocky ledge, forming a natural pool below. In dry season (January-March) the flow is modest, in rainy season (May-November) — powerful.
Swimming
You can swim in the natural pool — water is cool and refreshing after the heat. Rocky bottom, shallow depth. Be careful of currents, especially after rain. Locals swim here, tourists too.
Visiting

The waterfall is right by the A23 road (Ella-Wellawaya), 6 km from Ella. Hard to miss: parking, cafes, crowds. A few steps down from the road to enter.
Timing
Morning — fewer tourists and buses. Daytime — crowds, especially weekends. Evening — beautiful light but parking is harder.

Atmosphere
Ravana Falls is a waterfall for everyone: no hour-long jungle hike, no expensive entry fee. Drive up, photograph, swim — drive on. Yes, it's tourist chaos. But the water still falls beautifully, and if you arrive in the morning — you might catch a moment of silence between buses.
