A national park where elephants are the main attraction and almost guaranteed. Udawalawe features savanna around a reservoir, 600 wild elephants, and safaris where you will definitely see what you came for.

The Park

Udawalawe covers 30,821 hectares of savanna and grasslands in southern Sri Lanka. Around 600 elephants live in and around the park. Herds of up to 50 are common. Other wildlife includes water buffalo, sambar deer, crocodiles, and over 180 bird species.

Safari

Only licensed jeeps with drivers allowed. Morning safari: 6:00-10:00. Evening: 15:00-18:30. Duration: 3-4 hours. Entry around $20-25, jeep $40-60 per group. Total about $30-50 per person.

Elephant Transit Home

Nearby rehabilitation center for orphaned baby elephants. Visit during feeding times at 9:00, 12:00, 15:00, or 18:00.

Practical Tips

Best during dry season (May-September). Bring camera with zoom, binoculars, sunscreen. Accommodation available in nearby village or park lodges.
