佛牙寺
Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy is Sri Lanka's holiest shrine, housing Buddha's tooth for 16 centuries. A UNESCO-listed pilgrimage center and symbol of Sinhalese identity.
The Relic
The tooth was brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century. Whoever possesses it rules the country. The tooth is kept in a golden stupa behind seven nested caskets.
Puja
Three times daily (5:30, 9:30, 18:30) - ceremony with drums and lotus offerings. Arrive 30-40 minutes early.
Esala Perahera
July-August - 10 nights of processions with elephants and dancers. Asia's largest Buddhist festival.
