The Basilica of San Marino is the main church of the republic, dedicated to Saint Marinus, the founder and patron saint of San Marino. Built in neoclassical style between 1826-1838 by architect Achille Serra, it replaced an earlier 4th-century church on the same site. The impressive facade features eight Corinthian columns, while the interior houses relics of Saint Marinus beneath the main altar. Pope John Paul II visited in 1982 to venerate the saints relics. The basilica is depicted on the San Marino ten-cent euro coin.
