Shofukuji Temple
Shofukuji Temple holds the distinction of being the first Zen temple constructed in Japan. Founded in 1195 by priest Eisai after returning from China, he brought both Rinzai Zen philosophy and tea to Japan. The entire temple grounds have been designated a National Historic Site since 1969. Although the buildings cannot be entered, visitors can walk through the beautiful temple grounds and observe structures from outside, including the Imperial Envoy Gate, Musein Pond, Main Gate, Buddha Hall, and Priest's Room. Zazen meditation and sutra-copying sessions are occasionally held.
