Bantayan Island
Bantayan Island: Pristine White Beaches Away from the Crowds
Bantayan is one of those rare Philippine islands that hasn't turned into a tourist conveyor belt. There are no Boracay nightclubs, no El Nido crowds, no Siargao Instagram queues. Instead, you'll find kilometers of pristine white sand, calm turquoise sea, and that 'real Philippines' atmosphere everyone seeks but rarely finds.
The island is located in the northern part of Cebu Province, about four hours from the city. It's one of the largest islands in the region — around 108 square kilometers — with three main towns: Santa Fe (the tourist hub), Bantayan Town (the historic heart), and Madridejos (fishing village).
Why Bantayan
Bantayan is called 'one of the most underrated islands in the Philippines' — and rightly so. Beaches here rival famous resorts, but with far fewer tourists. The water is shallow and calm — perfect for families with children. Prices are lower than popular destinations. And most importantly, it retains that relaxed island atmosphere that draws people to Southeast Asia.
Yet infrastructure is well-developed: good hotels, restaurants, transport rentals. This isn't a wild island with tents — it's comfortable relaxation, just without the rush.
Best Beaches
Kota Beach
The main beach and one of the best in the Philippines. Fine white sand, gentle slope into the water, palm trees framing the edges — classic postcard perfection. The beach faces east, making it perfect for sunrises. Infrastructure nearby: cafes, loungers, kayak rentals.
Paradise Beach
Slightly north of Santa Fe, more secluded. Several boutique hotels with direct beach access. Great for those seeking tranquility.
Ogtong Cave Beach
A unique spot: beyond the beach is a natural pool inside a limestone cave. The water is cool and crystal clear — refreshing after sunbathing. Entry is around 100 pesos but worth it.
Madridejos Beaches
The west side of the island offers the best sunsets. The beach at Kota Park (not to be confused with Kota Beach) is a former Spanish fort with a wooden pier stretching into the sea. Perfect for photos and romantic evenings.
Things to Do
Explore the Island by Scooter
The best way to see Bantayan is to rent a motorbike (around 350 pesos per day) and ride around the entire island. In one day you can visit all three towns, discover secret beaches, and see authentic village life. Roads are good, traffic minimal.
Go Skydiving
Skydive Cebu operates on Bantayan — the only USPA-licensed dropzone in the Philippines. A tandem jump with ocean and island views is a lifetime experience. Cost around 15,000-18,000 pesos.
Visit Sts. Peter and Paul Church
Bantayan Town is home to one of the oldest churches in the Visayas — founded in the 16th century. Massive stone walls, wooden interior, centuries of atmosphere. Nearby is a small museum and old cemetery.
Kayak Through Mangroves
The ecological park with mangrove forests is a quiet, meditative spot. Wooden walkways over water, kayaking among roots, birdwatching. Famous among Filipinos as the filming location for 'Camp Sawi.'
Try Local Food
Bantayan is one of Cebu Province's main fishing centers. The local delicacy is dried danggit fish. Also try the freshest seafood at local restaurants and visit the dragon fruit farm near Bantayan Town for pitaya jam and ice cream.
Getting There
Standard Route: Bus + Ferry
- Bus to Hagnaya Port. From Cebu City North Bus Terminal, take a Ceres bus to Hagnaya Port. Air-conditioned fare is 165 pesos, non-aircon 140 pesos. Journey time 3-4 hours.
- Ferry to Santa Fe. Regular ferries run from Hagnaya to Santa Fe Port on Bantayan. Cost around 200-280 pesos, journey time 1-1.5 hours. Ferries run from early morning to late evening; check schedules in advance.
Faster and More Comfortable
- Van to port. Vans run from SM City Cebu directly to Hagnaya — 200 pesos, 3 hours, more comfortable than bus.
- Private transfer. Car with driver from airport or anywhere in Cebu to port — around 2,400 pesos. Convenient for groups or heavy luggage.
- Charter flight. For those who value time: Air Juan flies from Mactan Airport directly to Bantayan. 30-40 minutes, from 10,000 pesos. Irregular schedule — book ahead.
Where to Stay
Santa Fe
The main tourist zone with the most hotels, restaurants, and dive shops. Recommendations:
- Anika Island Resort — Most popular hotel, good pool and beach
- Kota Beach Resort — Right on the main beach
- Budget guesthouses — From 500 pesos per night, find on Booking or on-site
Bantayan Town
Fewer tourists, closer to real Filipino life. Accommodation cheaper but farther from main beaches.
Madridejos
The quietest option. Almost no tourists, but best sunsets and authentic fishing village vibes.
When to Go
Best time: February — May. Dry season, sunny weather, calm sea. March-May are hottest months, but there's always a sea breeze.
Avoid: June — November. Rainy season and typhoons. Ferries may be cancelled, beach vacation questionable.
Special dates: Holy Week before Easter — colorful religious processions, but lots of tourists.
How Many Days
Optimal — 3-4 days:
- Day 1: Travel to island, check-in, beach, sunset
- Day 2: Scooter around island, explore all beaches
- Day 3: Kayaking, church visit, relaxed day
- Day 4: Morning beach, return journey
You can stay longer if you want to truly disconnect. Bantayan is a great place to do nothing and feel no guilt.
Practical Tips
- Cash is essential. ATMs exist but bring backup from Cebu — sometimes they're out of order or money.
- Internet is unstable. Not ideal for remote work. Perfect for digital detox.
- Bargain gently. You can negotiate tricycle and tour prices slightly, but without aggression — locals are very friendly.
- Mosquitoes active at evening. Repellent essential.
- Respect local culture. Bantayan is a religious place. Dress modestly in churches and villages.
Bantayan vs Other Islands
vs Boracay: Bantayan is quieter, cheaper, more authentic. Boracay is for parties and world-class infrastructure.
vs Malapascua: Malapascua is for divers, Bantayan is for beach holidays. You can combine both.
vs Siargao: Siargao is for surfers and the scene, Bantayan is for families and peaceful relaxation.
Summary
Bantayan is the Philippines you imagined: white sand, warm sea, kind people, no rush. If you're tired of overcrowded resorts and just want to lie on a beach, read a book, and watch sunsets — this is your island.
Getting here is slightly harder than popular destinations. But that's exactly why it's so good. While everyone else is jostling on Boracay, you'll be watching the sun sink into the sea alone, thinking: 'Why didn't I come here sooner?'
