The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is Belgiums national church and a magnificent example of Brabantine Gothic architecture. Construction began in 1226 and continued for nearly 300 years. The cathedral features twin 64-meter towers, stunning 16th-century stained glass windows depicting Habsburg rulers, a Baroque pulpit from 1699, and the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament. Royal weddings and state funerals are held here. Below the cathedral lies an archaeological crypt with remains of a Romanesque church.
