Independence Square (Ploshcha Nezalezhnastsi) is one of the largest public squares in Europe and the ceremonial heart of Minsk. Originally called Lenin Square, it showcases impressive Stalinist architecture including the House of Government (1934) with its austere Constructivist design and a bronze Lenin statue. The square features a beautiful fountain with coats of arms of Belarusian cities. Below ground lies Stolitsa, a modern shopping mall with shops, cafes, and entertainment. The iconic Red Church (Saints Simon and Helena) adds Neo-Romanesque charm to the squares edge.
