Zemun

Zemun is a historic district of Belgrade that until 1934 was a separate Austro-Hungarian town, giving it a distinctly different character from the rest of the city. The Gardos Tower (Millennium Tower), built in 1896, offers 360-degree views of the Danube and Belgrade. Narrow cobblestone streets, Baroque architecture, the Danube promenade, and excellent fish restaurants make Zemun feel like a charming small coastal town within the capital.

faq.subtitle Zemun

Until 1918, the Danube was the border between the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires. Belgrade was Ottoman/Serbian, while Zemun was Habsburg. They merged in 1934, but Zemun retains its Central European character with Baroque buildings and different atmosphere

Zemun is famous for fish restaurants along the Danube quay. Try grilled carp (saran), catfish (som), or the Serbian fish soup (riblja corba). The floating restaurants (splavovi) offer fresh catches with river views. Prices are very reasonable
