Lake Wolfgangsee
Lake Wolfgangsee is a jewel of Austria's Salzkammergut region, surrounded by green Alpine peaks and charming villages along its shores. It is famous for crystal-clear blue waters and cruises on historic paddle steamers operating since 1873, including the original Kaiser Franz Joseph I. A top attraction is the Schafberg Railway, Austria's steepest cog railway, carrying passengers to the 1,783m Schafberg summit for breathtaking panoramic views of the lakes and surrounding mountains. The picturesque village of St. Wolfgang houses a historic church with the famous 15th-century Pacher Altar, a masterpiece of late Gothic art. Water activities from swimming to kayaking, stand-up paddling, sailing, and water-skiing are available. Ferry service connects St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang, and Strobl.
