UNESCO recognized it for the exceptional reconstruction effort that faithfully recreated the 13th-20th century urban complex using original materials and historical documents, symbolizing the preservation of cultural heritage.

Approximately 85% of Warsaw Old Town was destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 and subsequent German demolition. Reconstruction took place from 1949 to 1963.
