While officially named Warrior on a Horse to avoid diplomatic tensions with Greece, the statue clearly represents Alexander the Great. A plaque added after the 2018 Prespa Agreement acknowledges that Alexander belonged to ancient Greek (Hellenic) civilization.

The monument cost between 5.3 and 9.4 million euros according to various sources. It was cast by the Ferdinando Marinelli Artistic Foundry in Florence, Italy, and was part of the controversial Skopje 2014 project that added numerous monuments and buildings to the city center.
