Waimangu Volcanic Valley
Waimangu Volcanic Valley is the world's youngest geothermal system, formed after the catastrophic Mount Tarawera eruption in 1886. It features the Inferno Crater, the world's largest hot spring, and the massive boiling Frying Pan Lake. A 4km downhill walk through the valley ends at Lake Rotomahana, where you can take a boat cruise to the final resting place of the legendary Pink and White Terraces, once called the eighth wonder of the world before their destruction. The entire ecosystem regenerated naturally without human intervention - a living laboratory of volcanic recovery.
