Voortrekker Monument
The Voortrekker Monument is a massive granite monument honoring the Great Trek of the Boers (1835-1854) into the interior of South Africa. Standing 40 meters tall, it houses the world's largest marble frieze depicting scenes from the trek. On December 16th at noon, a ray of sunlight falls through an opening in the dome onto the cenotaph inscribed 'Ons vir jou Suid-Afrika' (We for thee South Africa). The complex includes a museum and nature reserve with hiking trails.
